The Sherman Chamber of Commerce has been serving business in the Sherman area since 1913. Today, the Chamber strives to provide the best services to the Sherman community just as they have for over 90 years.
So, what exactly does the Sherman Chamber of Commerce do? It is a legitimate question - and not an uncommon one. The Sherman Chamber of Commerce gathers and passes along information, prints brochures and promotes Sherman as a great place to live, do business and visit. Those things are the fringe benefits of the Chamber - the things we do as a matter of routine and because they need to be done. But, the primary function of the Chamber is as a catalyst, a common vehicle through which business and professional people work together for the common good of the city and its businesses.
Among the Chamber mission is working with businesses, other organizations, and individuals to help build a healthy economy, encourage and manage robust growth and find ways to improve the quality of life. That is no small task in this area with the rapid pace of growth.
Additionally, the Chamber focuses on providing resources and education for business owners, and acting as the "eyes and ears" of the business community on legislative and regulatory issues. A series of informative monthly luncheons and other seminars underpins the educational mission; communicating with policymakers at the local, county, state and federal level helps fulfill the other portion of that mandate.
The Ambassador group is an integral part of the Chamber. This special group of Chamber members serves as the public relations arm of the Chamber. The Ambassadors are fun-loving, hand-shaking, telephone-calling folks whose job is to welcome new Chamber members, make membership goodwill calls and to serve as the personal representative of the Chamber throughout the community. There are many benefits to being an Ambassador, but one of the key benefits is: Networking - As an Ambassador Club the member, as an Ambassador is there at the beginning, when a new member joins; the member, as an Ambassador attends Chamber sponsored or supported activities and meet the newest industry and businesses as they join the Chamber; the member as an Ambassador is invited to participate in the New Member Welcome Bags, by placing a pen, coffee cup, letter opener, or mousepad, or whatever item is available to promote the Ambassador Business, as well as making the new members feel welcome.
The Leadership Sherman program is also an important part of this strategy, offering young professionals the chance to learn how the various levels of government interact and work, while meeting elected officials and peers who can become parts of their personal network. Leadership Sherman boasts an impressive alumni of key political figures, business owners, area industry employees and other members of the community who are now an active and integral part.
The Chamber is organized as a non-profit organization, made up of businesses, organizations and professional volunteers, Ambassadors, who work with the Chamber staff to support various projects and to organize activities that benefit Sherman and its communities.
A Chamber is run by, and for the benefit of, its members. A Board of Directors, elected or appointed from the general membership, sets policy and guides the overall direction of the organization.
Operational responsibility falls on a qualified and eager staff that includes Interim President Eddie Brown, and Events Coordinator Lauren Bolin. Brown took the post of Interim Chamber President at the end of July 2011.
Numerous events throughout the year help Sherman businesses make connections to each other. They include Texoma Weekly Circle, "Mix & Mingle" mixers, ribbon cuttings, quarterly business luncheons, monthly educational seminars, the SISD New Teacher Lunch and the Annual Vegas Nights Fall Fundraiser.
